Thank you for sharing this info, and don't beat yourself up. You were both hurting and didn't know what you were getting into. I hope Emily will be able to maintain sobriety. 💕
Thank you. So far so good, but there are more and more dispensaries popping up in my area all the time, plus Emily turns 21 in April. Definitely a huge concern of mine.
Wow and wow. I started using CBD for sleep and then with THC and man did I come unglued. I quit it all together. I still don't sleep great but it's my sleep and no one else's. Great article.
Thanks, Roberta. And thank you for becoming a paid subscriber (just made my day). My mother is in her 70s and uses medical cannabis to help with pain and sleep, but she has to takes tolerance breaks because it stops working. I do think it helps many people - but yeah, it's not as harmless as many of us think it is.
Brain chemistry is changed by daily use and high dose THC is linked with cannabus psychosis. A family physician who prescribed medical mj to older people with pain had to caution about not pushing prescription. When I asked about don using topicsl CBD for his physicsl pain, she said no. Once a person goes psychotic on the drug any trace in a product can send them back to it.
Our industry in its greed has no limits on consumption and no factual literature. It is tragic outcome that what is known by psychiatric nurses dealing with ER rooms is ignored by the culture. Especially vulnerable are young men, whose brains are not fully grown until 25. They tend toward risky behavior. Why they have higher car insurance rates.
My son developed cannabus psychosis, on medical mj. The distributor was pushing THC content. THC regular use, often leads to psychosis because it changes the chemistry from the brain. It is a very hard addiction to recover from. One psychiatrist encounteted it first among soldiers returning from Afghanistan to U.S. The mental illness can be managed with antipsychotics but it is permanent. The streets are full of psychotic youth from this. And no one talks about it.
Glad you wrote about this. Glad also your daughter was not so far into it she was lost. My son is now in recovery at a group home. But the meds that allow him to function, also make creative work impossible. That was his world. At 26 I can only hope he can restart.
Excellent article, Jacqueline. Your information is accurate and well-researched. As an addictions counselor, I cannot tell you how many times I have heard stories almost identical to yours. People have a difficult time recognizing the addiction and harm that long-term use of cannabis products can cause.
The debate of whether or not to legalize cannabis becomes irrelevant in view of the addiction potential. Lots of people drink alcohol, but they do not become alcoholics. Addiction is a disease that has a genetic component, and it affects the addict's physical, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being. If a person has a predisposition toward the development of an addictive disorder, they will be more likely to become addicted to cannabis. It doesn't matter whether they get the cannabis from a dealer or a legal vendor - if they have the propensity to become addicted, they will become more dependent on the substance the more they use it.
Your daughter turns 21 soon, and she will legally be able to buy cannabis. The truth is, if your daughter wanted cannabis, it would take her less than ten minutes to get it. She doesn't need to wait until she can go to a dispensary. She is surrounded by cannabis products, and she has to make decisions regarding her sobriety constantly.
The best thing you can do for both you and your daughter is continue to attend your support group and set the excellent example of abstinence and sobriety that you have modeled for her. Congratulations on being clean and sober. I wish you and your daughter the best. L

Thank you for your comment, Susan. I'm so sorry your son had this experience.
